Donald Trump announced he was doubling tariffs on steel imports during an appearance Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh to tout a steel deal between U.S. Steel and Japan's Nippon.
President Trump will hold a rally Friday at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh, one week after signaling he had cleared a merger with Japan's Nippon Steel.
Nippon Steel plans to invest $14 billion in U.S. Steel's operations including up to $4 billion in a new steel mill if it gets the green light for its bid.
"They'll be looking at an investment rather than a purchase," President Donald Trump said at a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
