The Esrange Space Center in northern Sweden is in the race to launch its first satellite from Europe. The newly inaugurated spaceport is vying to send its first satellite-carrying rocket into orbit as early as next year.

Sweden has taken over the rotating presidency of the EU Council, for the third time since joining the bloc. The first major meeting will take place on Friday.
